El Salvador’s Ecosystem Restoration Model That Prioritizes The Environment

Latin America and the Caribbean have taken important steps to respond to climate change. Countries such as Brazil, Mexico, Peru, and Colombia have made important agreements to reduce their carbon emissions. Between 1990 and 2012, deforestation in some countries decreased, such as Brazil and Mexico. Thereby, these countries have reduced the relative contribution of the forestry sector to overall emissions in the region.

Other countries such as Costa Rica, Uruguay, Nicaragua, and Chile are taking advantage of the potential of renewable energy and gradually reducing the contribution of fossil fuels to their energy network.

The 7 Reasons Why Environmental Restoration Lags Worldwide

According to the World Resources Institute (WRI), one-quarter of the world’s land mass has suffered environmental degradation over the past 50 years. The costs have totaled at least $6.3 trillion in lost ecosystem services; on the flip side, there is massive investment potential in repairing all these lands. The challenge, however, is finding ways to make land restoration more enticing for investors.

A report WRI issued earlier this week suggests seven essential steps by which governments and the private sector can find ways to make ecosystems restoration an attractive financial proposition. The results would include more food grown, improved energy efficiency and of course, better air and water quality.

So what is getting in the way of restoring forests and other remediation efforts worldwide?

Consensus grows: climate-smart agriculture key to Paris Agreement goals

Attendees at the annual Global Landscape Forum conference in Bonn, Germany, this week sought approaches for implementing “climate-smart” agricultural practices to help keep global temperature from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) by 2100.

Some 40 percent of the earth’s surface is used for food production, with 400 million small farmers worldwide, plus industrial agribusiness, so policymakers understand that climate-smart agriculture, practiced broadly, could play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions and helping nations meet their Paris carbon-reduction pledges.

The Price of Forest Degradation and Biodiversity Loss for Livelihoods

BONN (IDN) – Forest degradation and biodiversity loss carry a very heavy price for climate and people’s livelihoods. Restoring forests matters when it comes to growing resilience to climate variation and securing a healthy environment for future generations. This was the main message delivered by experts and community leaders who met in Bonn (December 19-20, 2017) to discuss a more sustainable path to conservation.

“We should stop seeing indigenous peoples, natural resources and forests as a problem. We could see them as a solution,” said Robert Nasi, director general of the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) which hosted the Global Landscapes Forum, a large science-based platform on sustainable land use.
