From Policy to Action: Forest and economic revival with bamboo

Registration is required for this event. Register here.

INBAR will be hosting a side event at this Forum: ‘From policy to action: forest and economic revival with bamboo‘. The event will draw on two thematic priorities of UNFF16: ‘Enhancing forest-based economic, social and environmental benefits’ and ‘Reversing the loss of forest cover’.

This side event will present three case studies from Africa, Asia and Latin America, about the use of bamboo for forest and landscape restoration, and as a tool for livelihood and poverty reduction. The case studies will focus specifically on: product innovations and industrial value chains in Asia; energy value chain in Africa; and bamboo housing in Latin America.

The event will have one keynote speech, and three expert speakers. The presentations will be followed by a Q&A session.

Restoring Forests and Landscapes series: Consolidating gains and accelerating progress in the Phillipines

The Philippines is in a strategic position to respond not only to the Bonn Challenge but also to the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, 2021 to 2030.

The Decade is designed as the global movement that can end poverty, hunger, malnutrition, gender inequality and the degradation of ecosystems by harnessing the power of nature and local communities.

To showcase and consolidate the Philippines’ accomplishments and potentially set a national restoration agenda to which all stakeholders are committed, a webinar series and conference-workshop are proposed.

The webinars will discuss the forestland restoration (FLR) concept in the context of the Philippines (first webinar); the experiences of various groups in implementing FLR in the country (second and third webinars); and funding mechanisms and opportunities for FLR (fourth webinar).

A conference-workshop will follow the series to identify opportunities and mechanisms to cascade national FLR targets to local levels, building on existing restoration initiatives.

The webinars are knowledge-intensive and provide a platform to share experience, highlight challenges and limitations, and take an inclusive approach to identify options for the Philippines’ participation in these important international movements. The conference-workshop will serve as the culminating activity, with an end goal of setting a common national restoration agenda.

Digital Forum: Nature-Based Solutions

Over 40 percent of the world’s population is affected by land degradation.

Land degradation threatens food security, fuels violent conflict, drives biodiversity loss and contributes to the climate crisis through carbon and nitrous oxide emissions. It costs the global economy around USD 6–10 trillion per year, or roughly 10 percent of gross world product.

One of the most promising solutions to land degradation is forest and landscape restoration (FLR), which aims to regain ecological functionality and enhance human well-being in deforested or degraded landscapes. More than 2 billion hectares of such landscapes stand to be restored globally. However, FLR implementation still remains far below the level needed to address land degradation on a global scale.

On 29 April 2021, the Global Landscapes Forum will organize a digital forum on FLR hosted jointly by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) and the Global Partnership on Forest and Landscape Restoration (GPFLR). This event will help increase understanding in three key areas where FLR can make significant contributions: climate mitigation and adaptation, job creation, and reducing threats to biodiversity. It will also provide an opportunity to showcase the role of partnerships and collaboration in successful FLR.

The Roots of the FMNR Movement in Kenya

This discussion will explore the evolution of Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) in Kenya from an indigenous practice to a movement restoring livelihoods and landscapes across the country.   Farmer-managed natural regeneration (FMNR) is a low-cost, sustainable technique involving the systematic regeneration and management of trees and shrubs from tree stumps, roots and seeds.

Speakers from World Vision Kenya, World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF), together with panel members from partner organisations also supporting FMNR, will highlight the lessons for further scaling of FMNR up, out and deep across the Kenya and beyond in this free webinar.

Global Youth Summit

The virtual IUCN One Nature, One Future Global Youth Summit kicks off April 5th, 2021. The Summit will strengthen connections between young leaders and their existing global networks, encourage interdisciplinary learning, provide a space for broader storytelling on conservation, and add momentum to growing youth movements for nature and climate.

During this unique time of history, virtual spaces open the opportunity for greater inclusivity. Youth from around the world are invited to participate in youth-led capacity building workshops, networking events, and contribute to an outcome document to be delivered to IUCN’s World Conservation Congress in 2021.

Young people are the engine of change. To realize the world we want, it is critical to engage and empower the voice of youth.

Fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly

The fifth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) provides leadership, catalyzes, intergovernmental actions on the environment, and contributes to the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The overall theme of UNEA-5 is “Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”.

The theme calls for strengthened action to protect and restore nature and the nature-based solutions to achieve the SDGs in its three complementary dimensions (social, economic and environmental). UNEA-5 provides Member States and stakeholders with a plat-form for sharing and implementing successful approaches that contribute to the achievement of the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs, including the goals relation to the eradication of poverty and sustainable patterns of consumption and production. UNEA-5 will also provide an opportunity for Member States and Stakeholders to take ambitious steps towards building back better and greener by ensuring that investments in economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic contribute to sustainable development.

XV World Forestry Congress

Building a Green, Healthy and Resilient Future with Forests

The XV World Forestry Congress will be hosted by the Government of the Republic of Korea from 2 to 6 May 2022 and held at the COEX Convention and Exhibition Center in Seoul. The Congress will bring together global forest stakeholders to review and analyze key challenges facing the sector and ways to address these. Participation is usually diverse, with representation from all regions and sectors; including the public and private sector, NGOs, CSOs, scientific or professional bodies, and forestry societies, as well as those who simply care about forests and the environment.

The WFC 2022 will provide a unique opportunity for the global forestry community to consider the state and future of world forestry, particularly in the context of the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, while striving to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The Congress will focus on defining the role of forests in the global developmental agenda (2030 Agenda) and other major agreements (Global Forest Goals, Paris Agreement, post-2020 global biodiversity framework) and identify key measures that must be put in place as the forest sector adjusts to the new reality and aims to help ‘build back better’. Forests must be an integral part of discussions and decisions to be made on sustainable development, because this will determine the health, wellbeing and stability of the planet and the people.
