Uma ativista brasileira que ajudou milhares de pessoas da floresta amazônica a usarem suas terras de maneira sustentável conquistou um prêmio ambiental internacional nesta quarta-feira.

Apesar das ameaças de madeireiras, Maria Margarida Ribeiro da Silva, do Pará, faz campanha há mais de uma década pelo direito dos moradores locais de usarem seus terrenos para caça, pesca e coleta de plantas selvagens.

Climate change may boost rain in Kenyan river basin – scientists

ROME, Dec 19 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – Kenya’s Tana River Basin, a major source of hydroelectric power, food and fresh water, may see its annual rainfall increase as much as 43 percent by the end of the century because of climate change, scientists said on Tuesday.

The river basin, stretching from the centre to the east of the country, is home to 8 million people. It supplies 70 percent of Kenya’s hydro-power, and 80 percent of Nairobi’s drinking water, according to UN Environment.

Kenya’s Tana River Basin to get high rainfall: researchers

NAIROBI, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) — Kenya’s Tana River Basin is expected to see a 43 percent increase in rainfall due to climate change, the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) said on Tuesday.

In a report issued in Nairobi, the IWMI said the basin, which has been grappling with erratic rainfall patterns coupled with severe droughts, is set to experience downpours in the near future thanks to global warming.

WWF fordert bessere finanzielle Ausstattung für internationalen Waldschutz und funktionierende Waldlandschaften

Zum Start des heutigen „Global Landscapes Forum“ in Bonn fordert der WWF die Einrichtung eines Waldfonds des Bundesministeriums für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) mit 100 Mio. EUR Budget jährlich. „Mit Waldschutz und Wiederaufforstung können wir bis zu einem Drittel aller Maßnahmen durchführen, die weltweit zum Klimaschutz nötig sind. Jeder Euro mehr hilft uns dreifach: die Erderwärmung zu bremsen, die Lebensbedingungen der lokalen Bevölkerung zu verbessern und unsere Vielfalt an Pflanzen und Tieren zu erhalten. Mehr als die Hälfte aller Arten lebt in und von Wäldern und sie dienen 1.6 Milliarden Menschen als Lebensgrundlage “, sagt Dr. Susanne Winter, Programmleiterin Wald vom WWF Deutschland.
