We are seeking individuals who are passionate about environmental restoration, want to organise festivals or large-scale restoration activations, and are eager to make a tangible impact in their communities.

Greenpop and the UNCCD are thrilled to invite you to the Reforest Fest in South Africa, taking place from 16-21 April 2025. This is a chance to be part of a global environmental restoration movement and learn how to run a community-driven restoration event from experts.

Reforest Fest is Greenpop’s flagship event, uniting hundreds of volunteers for a weekend filled with tree planting, arts, music, and educational workshops in the beautiful Uilenkraal Valley. This immersive experience combines ecological restoration with a celebratory festival format, fostering lasting change in our communities.

The International Model Forest Network (IMFN) will host a Global Forum in the Eastern Ontario Model Forest in Canada from 26–30 May 2025, which will attract up to 200 delegates representing over 60 Model Forests from around the world.

The IMFN Global Forum is a business, technical, and networking meeting in which members share knowledge, review their accomplishments, address challenges, and agree on Network‐wide and other strategic plans and initiatives for the three‐year period following the Global Forum.

Since its creation, the IMFN has held five Global Forums:

• October 23-29^th, 1996 – Chihuahua, Mexico;
• September 8-10^th, 1999 – Halifax, Canada;
• November 7-11^th, 2005 – Turrialba, Costa Rica (with more than 130 delegates);
• June 16-20^th, 2008 – Hinton, Canada (with more than 150 delegates from 31 countries);
• March 24-27^th, 2011 – Burgos, Spain (with 225 delegates from 32 countries).

Organized by the Eastern Ontario Model Forest (EOMF) and its lead organization, the Ontario Woodlot Association (OWA), the 2025 IMFN Global Forum will take place on the Kemptville Campus Education and Community Centre. This Centre is an educational and multi-use facility serving the community of North Grenville and surrounding area, located right in the heart of the Eastern Ontario Model Forest, a pioneer member of the IMFN with over 30 years of experience.

Located less than an hour from downtown Ottawa, the Kemptville Campus includes 254 hectares and 17 main buildings, as well as woodlands, cropland, wetland, greenspace, greenhouses, trails, an agroforestry centre and maple bush, among other buildings. The forest of the campus is fully certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), under the Eastern Ontario Model Forest’s certification program.

Functions of the Global Forum are three‐fold:

• For the IMFN Assembly to take decisions on specific matters;
• To strengthen collaboration and synergies among members;
• To strengthen collaboration and visibility for the IMFN among other relevant initiatives and programmes, including international forest policy priorities, in support of IMFN and member goals and objectives.

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the first Southeast Asia “Educators Training” online workshop, scheduled to take place from 25 – 29 November 2024. This four-day workshop will bring together dedicated educators to empower them in teaching innovative university courses about land restoration and sustainability.

The workshop will be led by Universitas Gadjah Mada (Indonesia) in partnership with TH Köln (Germany) and is now open for applications from participants in the Southeast Asia Region and its surrounding countries.

This program is ideal for university educators, researchers, professionals in the fields of agriculture and land management, and those working in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or the private sector within Southeast Asia region and its surrounding countries.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) guides actions worldwide to preserve and protect nature. It was adopted by the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD) in December of 2022. This October, at the CBD’s 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) in Cali, Colombia, parties will review the framework’s implementation to date, take stock of each country’s revised and updated National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), further develop its monitoring framework, and mobilize more resources towards this cause.

Under the GBF, the CBD for the first time recognizes the importance of managed lands’ – including agricultural and urban areas’ – contribution to biodiversity conservation and restoration. For the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF), such recognition is timely. We have decades of experience working with land users across the Global South to meet climate, biodiversity, economic, and social goals simultaneously, through holistic approaches like agroforestry, sustainable wildlife management, and planting more trees on farms. We’re also deeply committed to protecting the planet’s remaining primary forests, which play particular roles within the biosphere and serve to maximize ecosystem services. We look forward to contributing our expertise to this critical global dialogue, and helping support our partners to reach their biodiversity targets across a range of landscapes, from forests to agriculture.
