As a follow up from the FTA 2020 Science Conference, FTA and its managing partners are now developing a series of open webinars, extracting the highlights from the conference and bringing them to the public. The aim is to inform and support concrete action on the ground with a focus on transformative science derived from FTA’s most innovative lines of research.

The CGIAR research program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA) is the world’s largest research for development program to enhance the role of forests, trees and agroforestry in sustainable development. Innovative finance is one of FTA’s key Operational Priorities, led by Tropenbos International (TBI), one of its managing partners.

On the 26^th of November, FTA and TBI are proud to launch and present their latest report on Innovative Finance for Sustainable Landscapes.

This milestone publication, developed through extensive open consultations and cutting-edge collaborative methods, explores the complex barriers that hinder the potential of external finance to increase sustainability of tropical landscapes and achieve positive impact at scale. A selection of most promising financial innovations and schemes are identified and discussed and pathways to alleviate these barriers are proposed. These findings result from a participatory process with strong engagement from the Civil Society and the Private Sector. The outcomes of the report were recently reviewed at the FTA Science Conference.

In the occasion of the launch of the report, FTA and TBI would like to invite everyone to an open webinar to illustrate some of the key findings and open questions that the study reveals, as well as what are the future areas of collaborations for implementing innovative finance.

The discussion will bring together perspectives from different stakeholders and donors, and will allow ample time for question and answer sessions from the audience.

The ThinkForest forum brings together policymakers, the scientific community and stakeholders, offering a space for science-policy dialogue which builds bridges on pan-European forest and bioeconomy issues. It is chaired by Janez Potočnik, former EU Commissioner for both Science and Research, and Environment. From its foundation in 2012 until June 2019, it was chaired by former Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) have established an action-oriented partnership to accelerate the pace of RE adoption for strengthening economic value chains and developing resilient enterprises in the Hindu Kush Himalayas (HKH) region. The partnership aims to leverage the two institutions’ expertise and strong buy-in from governments as intergovernmental organizations. Within the framework of this partnership, ICIMOD and IRENA are conducting a comprehensive scoping exercise to analyse energy needs and gaps in selected key economic value chains in the HKH region and the opportunities offered by RE solutions. The scoping exercise further identifies actions needed for scaling up the use of RE and energy efficiency (EE) solutions.

Cost-competitive renewable energy solutions, coupled with their modularity and adaptability, provide a unique opportunity to reconcile energy, socio-economic development and climate objectives in the Hindu Kush Himalayas (HKH) region. Renewables could significantly contribute to improving livelihoods and well-being of mountain communities by providing access to reliable, affordable and environmentally-sustainable energy, while also strengthening local enterprises and climate resilience.

To share the preliminary findings of the assessment and gather feedback, IRENA and ICIMOD jointly organized a consultative workshop on “Renewable energy solutions for enterprise development in the Hindu Kush Himalaya” on 20 November 2019 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The workshop convened over 50 experts mainly comprising the three major stakeholder groups needed to deploy RE solutions at speed and scale across the HKH region: local enterprises; policy makers; and enablers such as financing institutions, development agencies, and foundations.

The second international Drivers for Wood Construction event including Rothoschool on tour will be held in Joensuu 21.-22.10.2020. The first Drivers for Wood Construction seminar in September 2019 brought together over 180 wood construction professionals from 12 countries, and this year the event is expected to be even bigger.

Drivers for Wood Construction 2020 starts on October 21st with Rothoschool On Tour. Rothoschool brings the European leading experts to Joensuu to share their knowledge on construction physics, wood joint techniques, building codes, and building information modelling (BIM). The training will go deep into the technical details and solutions and provides you with useful tools to be applied in daily work.

EU Green Week 2020 is now scheduled for 19-22 October 2020, on the theme of nature and biodiversity. After the adoption of a new EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 in May, Green Week will highlight the contribution biodiversity can make to society and the economy, and the role it can play in supporting and stimulating recovery in a post-pandemic world, bringing jobs and sustainable growth. The new strategy shows how the recovery is an opportunity for a fresh start, in the knowledge that transformative change is possible. It’s a chance to rethink our relationship with nature, to change the activities that are driving biodiversity loss and the wider ecological crisis, and to weigh up the implications for our economy and society. EU Green Week will examine how EU policies such as the European Green Deal can help protect and restore nature, leaving it room to recover and thrive.

This year’s Green Week will also act as a milestone on the path to the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity, now planned for 2021, where world leaders will adopt a 10-year action plan for biodiversity – a new global deal for people and nature.

Launch of a Global Assessment Report

A new and most comprehensive scientific assessment presented by the Global Forest Experts Panel (GFEP) on Forests and Poverty reveals critical links between forests, trees and poverty alleviation. The report makes a valuable contribution to achieving the first and foremost of the United Nations‘ Sustainable Development Goals aimed at ending poverty. This is even more important in light of the current pandemic under which efforts to fight poverty have suffered a severe setback. The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), on behalf of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), established the Panel in the framework of the GFEP initiative.

Content will examine “Finance & Investment” of global food systems. Discussion panelists will address vulnerabilities and the need for high-risk, long-term research efforts and innovative technology investments. Key research studies and resulting social, economic, and environmental impacts will be presented and discussed in the context of what has been done and what is needed to support future ventures that successfully meet development goals. Particular attention will be directed toward impacts of the COVID-19 experience and how finance and investment can strengthen food systems resilience.

The event will be organized by the Consortium for Innovation in Post-Harvest Loss and Food Waste Reduction. The Consortium is composed of leading institutions in the Americas (Iowa State University, University of Maryland, Zamorano Pan-American Agricultural School, University of São Paulo), Europe (Wageningen University and Research), Middle East (Volcani Center), and Africa (University of Nairobi, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Stellenbosch University). Academic partners are leveraging knowledge, expertise, motivation, and vision to conduct research that improves storage and distribution, develops tracking and monitoring, minimizes spoilage through pre-and post-harvest innovation, and changes behavior to reduce post-harvest loss and food waste reduction (PHL-FW). Together with funding partners, The Rockefeller Foundation and Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research, the Consortium is focused on how finance and investment are leading to the sustainable reduction of PHL-FW.
