Achieving the goals of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration requires efforts at multiple scales and by multiple actors, through inter-sectoral and inter-generational approaches. In the last decade, youth networks and organizations have increasingly taken action and demonstrated to the world the power of youth leadership. According to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration’s strategy, youth involvement will be key for building a global restoration movement. But how can we leverage on existing youth movements and networks (especially in a time of COVID) to ensure ecosystems are restored, and youth leadership is amplified?

Food waste is not just a waste of money; it is a waste of valuable resources that are needed to produce, process and transport the food (not to mention a strain on communities and the environment). We all need and (most of us) love food, but we should not perpetuate the current patterns of food waste. Being able to choose what and how much you eat is a privilege, and we should use this privilege to stop eating our planet. This Youth Daily Show will explore the main wasted household items, and will share useful tips to reduce food waste!

Food should be a human right. A right to food protects the fundamental liberty for all individuals to feed themselves with dignity. The right to food should be supported in ways that allow all individuals to have the means and freedom to access food that is quantitatively and qualitatively adequate to meet the individual’s dietary needs and correspond to the cultural traditions of the people that the individual belongs to. This session will explore food sovereignty and designing a just food system.

There is currently no legal definition of what ‘sustainable food’ is, although terms like ‘organic’ or ‘fair trade’ are more defined, and come with their own certification systems, compared to others like agroecology, permaculture or ‘climate-smart’. Is sustainable food the same for everyone around the world? How is a living and thriving planet associated with food? Why should we pay attention to what we eat or where our food comes from? This 30-minute session will aim to tackle these questions and more with youth from around the world.

COVID-19 has brought the planet to a halt, disrupting entire food systems, the global economy, environmental and climate efforts and much, much more. What we are witnessing is a global ‘syndemic’, or synergy of epidemics – crises that share root causes and reinforce each other, striking the world with one blow. It is clear that total system change is needed, and fast. This plenary will highlight the urgent need for resilient, nutritious and food secure landscapes in order to achieve transformative change for our planet.
