Urban landscape. Urban landscape was conceived as the space of expression and social appropriation par excellence, it is the space that houses the daily passing of collective life, it is the one that gives identity and character to the city, the one that allows it to be recognized and lived in its urban places : natural, cultural and patrimonial, the treatment of these spaces, with strong citizen participation, multiplies the actions and the diversity of solutions improving the environmental quality of the group that composes them and biodiversity. - Photo by: ANTONIA SUERO SÁNCHEZ
Urban landscapes’ role in conservation and biodiversity in Gran Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Researcher Antonia Suero is carrying out a study analyzing the urban green system of Greater Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She’s exploring its metabolic aspects, ecological infrastructure, biodiversity, expanse in both public and private areas, and most frequent animal and plant species.
The objective of this research is to seek solutions for the conservation of these spaces, and new opportunities for natural heritage – because a city without squares, parks, or spaces for casual encounters would be environmentally, socially and economically poor. Green spaces not only contribute to cities’ economies; they also beautify these areas and are essential for the well-being of citizens.
