Chido never knew her father. Her mother died from AIDS just after her uncle abused her for the first time. She was abused for years until the church in Mutare (Zimbabwe) selected her at the age of 11 to learn how to farm mushrooms.

Chido discovered that mushrooms grow fast. In less than 2 weeks she could cultivate her own food. She realized when she had food for her blind grandma and younger brother she would not have to tolerate abuse. All fourteen of her fellow students though were married within months, sold off by distant family to older men. She was fortunate to be adopted but insisted that she would be given a chance to teach other girls to farm mushrooms in her home country.
