Perrine and Charles Herve-Gruyer are considered by many to be the ambassadors of permaculture in France, where they established the Bec Hellouin farm in 2006. Perrine, an international lawyer, and her husband, a documentary director and sailor, decided to exchange their former careers for a settled life on their farm. For their work, the couple was recently awarded a sustainable development prize in Haute Normandie. Their farm offers a model for a respectful agricultural approach that also boasts a higher productivity than conventional methods. By working in harmony with nature on a 1,000-square meter area, they have been able to demonstrate the feasibility – and the quality – of production that re-creates biodiversity while generating high revenues.
