The Tonton Forest Reserve in the western region of Ghana is over-logged and degraded. Local farmers are being assisted to follow a modified taungya system, whereby they are assigned portions of the forest in which to plant food crops such as plantain, cocoyam and tomatoes, alongside tree species on the same piece of land. They then take care of the trees they have planted, and the benefits from harvesting the matured tree species will be shared amongst the various stakeholders.
