Dr Hannes Böttcher is a Senior Researcher and Head of the Land Use Group in the Energy and Climate Division of Oeko-Institut. He is a forest scientist by training. Hannes holds a PhD from the University of Freiburg and is an expert in modelling carbon in managed forest ecosystems, which was the subject of his dissertation. He has 17 years of experience in conducting and publishing research on forest and land-use modelling, forest monitoring, the role of land use in climate policy, greenhouse gas reporting and accounting, and carbon markets in the land-use sector. He coordinates national, EU and international projects with a focus on land use and climate change, including the German ICI-funded project Transparent Monitoring. The project developed guidelines for transparent monitoring approaches for effective GHG monitoring in the land sector by implementing open source tools and datasets and improving data access in four case study countries.
