Tim Kasser

Professor of Psychology
Knox College

After receiving my Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Rochester in 1994, I accepted a position at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, where I am currently Professor of Psychology. I have authored over 120 scientific articles and book chapters on materialism, values, and goals, among other topics. My first book, The High Price of Materialism, was published in 2002; my second book (co-edited with Allen D. Kanner), Psychology and Consumer Culture, was released in 2004. My third book (co-authored with Tom Crompton), Meeting Environmental Challenges: The Role of Human Identity, was released in 2009. My fourth book, Lucy in the Mind of Lennon, was released in 2013. My fifth book, told entirely in cartoon format and co-authored with Larry Gonick, is Hypercapitalism: The modern economy, its values, and how to change them; it was released in 2018. For the last 15 years, I have consulted with activist groups that work against the commercialization of children and that work towards a more inwardly rich lifestyle than what is offered by consumerism. I live with my wife, two sons, and assorted animals in the Western Illinois countryside.
