Michael Schlup is Sail Ventures’ Chief Operating Officer and responsible for E&S, jurisdictional and landscape elements of the &Green Fund investment process. A trained geographer, Michael has in the past worked as Global Partnerships Coordinator for Sustainability of the world’s largest cocoa and chocolate company, Barry Callebaut, and has been instrumental in establishing an innovative blended finance scheme to directly finance cocoa smallholder farmers in collaboration with IDH and IFC.
Prior to that, he worked for Islan Asset Management, advising global agribusiness company Bunge on the establishment of an asset management business and the acquisition of Climate Change Capital. For Bunge, Michael also worked as Regional Manager Africa for the Environmental Markets team, working with 180+ projects in agribusiness value chains in Africa.
In 2004, he was the Founding Director of the Gold Standard carbon project certification scheme under the auspices of WWF, establishing the brand as the leading scheme for carbon credits globally and leading it to a global brand creating environmental assets from over 1,000 projects until his departure in 2010.
He started his career as a consultant in the environmental management and strategy space and has worked for BASE, the UNEP Collaborating Centre for Sustainable Energy Finance and a partner to UNEP’s Sustainable Energy Finance intiative. He is based in Switzerland.
