Maxwell Gomera serves as the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in South Africa, leading efforts to drive sustainable development, economic transformation, and social inclusion. Since assuming this role, Max has been instrumental in fostering partnerships that enhance South Africa’s capacity to tackle pressing challenges such as economic inequality, climate change, and digital transformation. His leadership is pivotal in aligning UNDP’s work with national priorities, ensuring impactful interventions in governance, environmental sustainability, and economic resilience. In addition to his Resident Representative role, Max is the), focusing on mobilizing capital for environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive investments across Africa. Under his leadership, the Hub integrates sustainable finance into economic systems to promote long-term prosperity.
Before his tenure in South Africa, Max was the Resident Representative for UNDP Rwanda, where he pioneered innovative carbon finance initiatives, strengthened local markets, and supported communities in mitigating the economic burden of rising living costs. His work in Rwanda exemplified his ability to mobilize resources and shape policies that drive inclusive growth.
Previously, Max served as Director of the Biodiversity and Land Branch at the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and was a fellow with Aspen New Voices. A resource economist by training, he has extensive expertise in nature conservation, agricultural development, and the interplay between human and environmental systems. He was also a key contributor to the “Global Green New Deal,” which sought to rejuvenate the global economy post-2008 through employment creation, climate action, and poverty alleviation.
Beyond his professional roles, Max is a prolific writer, contributing to major media platforms on issues related to sustainability, economics, and development. He also sits on several boards, including TASAI Inc., which enhances agricultural markets and seed systems, and the Community Conservation Fund for Africa, in collaboration with the ACCOR Group of Hotels.
