Maria Nuutinen works as Forestry Officer – Peatlands in the National Forest Monitoring (NFM) Team within the REDD+ and NFM cluster of the Forestry Department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). She focuses on monitoring peatlands and improving their management, contributing to sustainable, drainage-free livelihoods, securing peatland ecosystem services and, in particular, avoidance of greenhouse gas emissions from drained and/or burning peat soils and other high-carbon landscapes. Maria is FAO’s focal point to the Global Peatlands Initiative and oversees global projects with activities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Peru and the Republic of Congo.
