Georgine Luamba Lobengo is the coordinator and founding member of the Association of Pygmy Women in Équateur (AFPEQ) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The group’s objective is to contribute to the development and safety of Pygmy women in Équateur, a western province of the DRC. Its intervention activities are focused on two of the province’s territories: Bikoro and Ingende. The association was founded in 2008 and is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and other donors. It is active in the following areas: (i) the environment and sustainable development; (ii) water, hygiene and sanitation; (iii) the strengthening of democracy; (iv) the supervision and training of women and single mothers; and (v) basic infrastructure. Before founding AFPEQ, Georgine was secretary at the Association of Minority Women in Mbandaka (AFEM) and was an advisor to a collective network of women in Équateur. In July 2019, she took part in a women’s leadership workshop in Kinshasa, where Bantu and Pygmy women shared their experiences and collaborated on the implementation of activities and certain training sessions. Georgine graduated with a state diploma in pedagogy in 1997.
