Dr Ariane Hildebrandt is director general at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Germany. As of September 2023, she is responsible for global health, equality of opportunity, digital technologies and food security (including population policy, social protection, education, decent work, data and statistics, sustainable supply chains, water, circular economy, agriculture and rural development).
In prior years, she was director general for policy issues, data and effectiveness, including planning and financial management of bilateral development cooperation, controlling of implementing agencies (GIZ, KfW), modes of delivery and procedures. Further issues were data policy, statistics, aid effectiveness, evaluation, and development research.
Ariane Hildebrandt has worked in various areas of the department since 1998. Before she joint BMZ, she worked for the Federal Ministry of Finance and the University of Würzburg, where she obtained her PhD. She holds a degree in economics and an MBA from the State University of New York at Albany, USA.
