Ann Gachambi Njuki

Ann Gachambi Njuki is a Kenyan-born grassroots woman with experience developing movements and promoting adult education. Ann has extensive experience working for grassroots women’s and girls’ rights in her community and elsewhere at the local, national, regional, and international levels. Through her work, she has inspired other grassroots women to confront patriarchal views and gender stereotypes in the community and family settings. Ann has promoted women’s rights to land, clean cooking energy, unpaid care and domestic work, women in political leadership, and the inclusion of grassroots women in all decision-making platforms through her leadership role as a coordinator of more than 100 women-led groups. Ann has been active in numerous international forums. In 2016, she participated in the Women 2 Kilimanjaro project, a rural mobilization of women from 22 African nations on the issue of land rights. In 2017, she was nominated for a seat on the Women to Kilimanjaro Charter Council. She was chosen to talk about women’s land rights at a United Nations side event during the General Assembly in New York in 2018 and to honor Brazilian women’s land rights activists in 2019. Ann was recently chosen as a significant participant at the 4th GIMAC Strategic Meeting, which evaluates recent advancements on how the AU, RECs, and other important stakeholders may work together to ensure the success of the programs. Ann Gachambi believes in the power of collective strength and action to end patriarchy at all levels. As Shabana Azmi said, “In a patriarchal society like ours, women have to fight hard for a seat at the table. Boys are privileged over girls from birth. Equal opportunity and access for girls and boys must become the norm.”
