Slash-and-burn agriculture, locally known as tavy, is the main driver of forest loss in eastern Madagascar but also essential to achieve rice subsistence for farmers. In the SAVA Region of NE Madagascar, Tavy is shaping the landscape together with vanilla agroforests and rice paddies leading to a diverse small-scale mosaic of land-uses.
