Mapping landscapes remains critically important and significantly underdeveloped aspect of forestry. With data and tools controlled by large organizations, the talk will illuminate the possibilities for a more open and connected approach to knowledge sharing and explain the institutional and technological challenges. Using examples from mapping palm oil in Indonesia and cocoa expansion in the Ivory Coast, the talk will draw on the experience of MapHubs (maphubs.com), which uses big data and field insights to build cooperation between environmental watchdogs, government agencies, and companies.
