GLF Kunming 2020: Securing Biodiverse Landscapes and Ecosystems

Recent reports reveal that humanities actions on land in the past 40 years have produced the largest negative impact on biodiversity in land-based and freshwater ecosystems. Human activity in seascapes are also rapidly altering marine ecosystems and destroying life in the world’s oceans. It’s time to restore an ecological balance.

In October 2020, GLF will host a one-day event within the UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP15) in Kunming, China. As the CBD prepares for its Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework the world must step forward and set a pathway for restoring the earth. Nature based solutions are the only way to arrive at CBD’s vision of ‘Living in Harmony with Nature by 2050’ and can give us a fighting chance to achieve the goals for the Paris climate agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

WHY SHOULD YOU JOIN?

Biodiversity is everything. It is the environment in which we live, the food that we eat, and the air that we breathe the awe and beauty that inspires art and innovation. It is the most fundamental part of life itself -and extends into the global economy and business. The planet is on the brink of a mass extinction. Rapid biodiversity loss, from vanishing mammals to insects and seed species, are threatening the ecological balance and systems which underpin life on earth.

"Today on behalf of everyone who loves life, I invite us all to join in native ecosystem restoration so that we can have some human dignity in having done something concrete for the planet, leaving new generations some hope, a planet with life and not a death rock. Let us not be so insulated in our comfortable lives that we accelerate the destruction of the only planet we have."

Constantino Aucca
President of Ecosistemas Andinos (ECOAN) and Coordinator, Accion Andina

"We are facing a huge crisis at the moment that is closely linked to the climate crisis, a crisis of biodiversity loss, land degradation. Our forests are burning and we are highly polluted."

Carole Dieschbourg
Minister for the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development of Luxembourg

"We need to take action. Let’s do it. Let’s establish a committee with different sectors, regions and ages where we define an operational root for the decade on restoration, because we are running out of time"

Lina Pohl
FAO Representative in Mexico, Former El Salvador Minister of Environment and Natural Resources
