Bustar Maitar is the director of Kurabesi Nusantara Indonesia (www.kurabesiexplorer.com). One of its arm, Kurabesi Explorer Liveaboard, operates as a social enterprise and is 100 percent owned by Indonesians and operated by a local crew. Kurabesi supports local culture as well as environmental conservation activities in the areas where it operates such as in Raja Ampat and the Birds Head Seascape in West Papua, Indonesia. Among others, Kurabesi supports several non-government organisations in conducting scientific reef health monitoring activities and forest cover monitoring in coastal areas. Its high-end marine tourism services include introducing guests to conservation activities such as reef health monitoring, and encouraging guests to go to less visited areas and travel in small groups to minimise direct environmental impact. Kurabesi Explorer is recently awarded as Liveboard of the year at the BlueGreen360 Awards during the Asia Dive Expo (ADEX) in Suntec City Singapore. Born and grew up in Jayapura, and graduated from Papua University in Manokwari, West Papua, Bustar is a marine enthusiast and PADI-licensed diving instructor. For over 20 years he has been campaigning for social justice and environmental protection for Indonesia. He was among the first staff to be recruited for Greenpeace’s new office in Indonesia in 2005 and has spent more than 11 years with Greenpeace.
