Hugo Verkuijl is an economist with expertise in business development, startups, value chain development, feasibility and impact assessment; agro-economic and policy research; and general management. He has more than 25 years of experience gained through postings in Ethiopia and Mali and numerous short-term assignments in the Caribbean, Central America, Eastern and Southern Africa and India. His overarching drive is to set up sustainable business that have financial, social and environmental returns. Since June 2014, he works for Hivos where he develops programs that contribute towards sustainable food systems and climate resilience. Prior to that he was CEO of Mali Biocarburant S.A. a private enterprise that produces specialty oil from oilseeds (2007-2014). From 1999 till 2007 he worked as senior consultant value chain development for the Royal Tropical Institute, Amsterdam.
