This session is your chance to immerse yourself in the labyrinthine, ecologically-critical yet often-forgotten realm of a mangrove forest – minus all the bugs and mud! Documentary makers Michael Du and Justin Davey travelled to the island of Negros Oriental in the Phillippines to meet with community members who are making impressive efforts to protect and restore their mangrove ecosystems, through reforestation projects and sea patrols to deter illegal fishing. First, we’ll view a short documentary called ‘Hidden Heroes’, which showcases the lives and stories of some of the unsung heroes at the coalface of this challenging, inglorious and deeply important task. Next, it’s your chance to get knee-deep into one of these biodiversity-rich carbon sinks – without getting your shoes wet or fending off mosquitoes – as Du, alongside local expert Camille Rivera of Marine Conservation Philippines, takes us on a virtual tour of the Talabong Bird Sanctuary and Mangrove Park in Bais City.
