Maryam Kwajaffa is the coordinator for Sierra Leone Environment Matters(SLEM)- GLFx Kenema. GLFx Kenema is a non-profit organization for everyone who is passionateed about the environment and making changes in communities across Sierra Leone. Our goal is to help thriving environment and ecosystems safe for both humans and wildlife. Our mission is for every young person in Sierra Leone to love, protect and nurture their natural environment. A major challenge to the environment in Sierra Leone is the lack of awareness of the impact we have on the environment. The majority of the people engaged in environmental degradation are often unaware of the potential consequences of their impact on the environment. And what makes the situation even worse is that 50% of Sierra Leoneans cannot read or write. Research indicates that low literacy levels and the lack of sensitivity to the environment are some of the root causes of environmental degradation in Sierra Leone. However, we believe that one way to tackle this problem is to invest in the next generation of Sierra Leoneans by connecting them to nature so that they grow up to be environmentally friendly with knowledge and skills to help them better protect and care for our natural world. We believe that this can be achieved through one of our program titled ‘The Environmental Journey’ . The Environmental Journey helps equip students and communities with the necessary knowledge and skills that will be useful in protecting our environment and fostering a positive attitude. Moreover, educating young people in Sierra Leone about the environment is important. They are the ones who are going to inherit the environment we will leave behind. They would have to live and deal with the choices we are making today about the environment. Therefore, we need to inspire them now so that they grow up and use that in the future.
