Dr. Enkh-Amgalan Tseelei obtained her BSc degree in agricultural economics at the Mongolian National University of Agriculture and her MA in Development and Social Study at the University of Manchester, UK. After working in Mongolia for some time, she undertook her PhD at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Zurich. She has more than 18 years of experience in community-centered sustainable rangeland management in Mongolia. She has played a key role in developing and promoting the Sustainable Code of Practice for Nomadic Livestock Production of Mongolia. This Code of Practice was developed in consultation with hundreds of nomadic herders, men and women all over Mongolia, and herders have named it “Responsible Nomad.” Responsible Nomads code of practice and traceability system aims to provide buyers of livestock products of Mongolia with the tools to appreciate best practices of nomadic livestock herding for sustainable production; source their livestock raw materials from nomadic herders to maintain healthy rangeland or improve their management and livestock that have been treated responsibly; promote value chain of livestock products that incentivize improvements in animal care and land management and ensure transparent chain of custody from a herder household to final product to provide customers with a guarantee that the raw materials of the effects their buy is truly from Responsible nomadic herder households. She is also one of the key members of a group of local experts. They developed and tested the Pasture User Groups-Rangeland Use Agreement approach to address the negative consequences of “Tragedy of the Commons” in sustainable management of open access public rangelands in Mongolia and actively promote the acceptance of indigenous user rights of nomadic herders to their traditional grazing lands in national legislations.
