Mari Corrêa is a Brazilian filmmaker and founder of the Catitu Institute (Instituto Catitu), where she initiated a pioneer audiovisual training project in Brazil for indigenous women to value women’s empowerment.

She started her audiovisual work with indigenous communities in 1992 in the Xingu Indigenous Land, in Brazil. She introduced a new methodology for the training of indigenous filmmakers and produced about 40 indigenous films. She coordinated around 50 audiovisual training workshops for more than 20 indigenous peoples.

In 2009 she developed a specific audiovisual training methodology for indigenous women.

  • Where did the swallows go? (Para onde foram as andorinhas?) direction, editing
    (23 min, 2016) Coproduced by Instituto Socioambiental with Instituto Catitu, World Premiere at the Paris, 2015 (COP21).
  • Pirinop – My First Contact (Pirinop – Meu Primeiro Contato) direction, editing, production
    (52 min and 83 min, 2006/2007). Coproduced by France 2 TV with Zarafa Films. Supported by Jan Vrijman Fund (Netherlands) and National Geographic’s All Road Seed Grant (USA). Official Competitive Selection – IDFA- International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam
  • Indigenous Voices (Voix Indiennes) direction, editing
    70 min, 1997. Coproduced by TV ARTE & French Connection Productions (France/Germany).
  • Body and Souls (Xingu, o Corpo e os Espíritos) direction, editing
    54 min, 1996. Coproduced by 5éme TV with Les Films du Village Production, France.
    Awarded at the Bilan du Film Ethnographique, festival created by Jean Rouch, Musée de l’Homme, Paris.
  • Back to the good land (De volta à terra boa) direction, production
    21 minutos, 2007. Directed by Mari Corrêa and V.Carelli. Produced by Vídeo nas Aldeias. Best short documentary at Etnographic Festival of Rio de Janeiro, awarded by the Brazilian Association of Documentary Filmmakers, 2008
