Lion Martius is currently pursuing a PhD in Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences at the University of Edinburgh. He works at the frontier between biological and environmental sciences, at the interface with global change. He’s research is focused on understanding plant physiological and ecosystem processes within tropical rainforests. He has a special interest in understanding the effects of decadal-scale drought on plant function and on hydraulic system recovery after the removal of drought in tropical rainforest trees in the Amazon. He is also interested in the mechanisms that drive tree mortality, as well as climate resilience. He’s research project is embedded within a multi decadal long-term running precipitation throughfall-exclusion experiment (ESECAFLOR) in Caxiuanã, in the eastern Amazon in Brazil. He has an additional interest and working experience in woodland expansion, ecosystem restoration and nature-based solutions.
