When I started working in forest and landscape about 20 years ago, only innovative capital like GEF was promoting links between production and conservation; but today is a very special day. Having the private and Banking sectors investing in sustainable landscape is a revolution.
The land use sector has suffered disproportionately from setting the bar so high and being unable to generate expected results. But I don’t give up. We don’t have any other option.
When restoration commitments are made, it is young people like me who will get excited and ready to begin planting but to do that we need to build trust with investors.
We need to show farmers we can restore through production, and produce through restoration.
We need blended knowledge, we need to learn from the work of others. Then we can move on to blended finance for landscape restoration.
We need to convince our citizens that we need a restoration program. We are proving that restoration is a big issue, an urgent action that all actors should pay attention to.
The challenge is to really capitalize on the financial infrastructure we have; we need to collaborate effectively, know our role and how to put that capital to work.
We need to stop talking and thinking and acting like we will meet these targets, we will not. WE must all begin the work of adapting to a much warmer and uncertain global climate.
