Using Big Data for Landscape Restoration: EO-li platform

GLF INVESTMENT CASE WASHINGTON, D.C., 30 May 2018: LANDSCAPE TALKS
B2 Auditorium

We will discuss the ideas of connectivity, transparency, traceability and sharing for sustainable land restoration context through a web based global broker platform using earth observation big data and a market place. We propose a geo-based solution to connect the multisectoral stakeholders of land restoration. In addition, the talk will provide a solution to measuring progress towards climate and sustainable development goals via big earth observation data and cloud computing.

The Web based platform that will be presented will exclusively be based on Free and Open Source Software and will come with free remote sensing data from the European Copernicus Programme and other free data sources. Since all code and all data is freely accessible, stakeholders are invited to participate and create a sustainable land restoration case for their respective communities. The Web-based platform “EO-li” has 4 components:
(i) Identify: identification of a location to be restored;
(ii) Select: selection of an area and the actors involved in the restoration activity;
(iii) Monitor: monitoring and reporting on the progress of the project using earth observation and geospatial data;
(iv) Learn: a learning platform providing guidance and capacity strengthening.
